Young diabetics suffering depression: WA researchers

One in three young diabetics is suffering from depression, according to a study published today.

While one in 10 have symptoms of depression, another quarter appear to be suffering severe depression, it found.

Researchers from Fremantle Hospital in Western Australia and the University of Western Australia looked at 92 young adults with Type 1 diabetes.

This type usually starts in childhood or young adulthood and patients are reliant on insulin injections.

The study involved people aged 18 to 28, with an average age of 22.

Researchers found that young adults with depressive symptoms also had poorer blood sugar (glycaemic) control, leaving them at greater risk of complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness and amputation.
