Teen's suicide prompts bill criminalizing harassment of children

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — After the suicide of a St. Charles County teen, lawmakers want to make it a felony for adults to harass children.Police say 13-year-old Megan Meier hanged herself in 2006 after being teased on a social networking Web site.Her mother, Tina Meier, said Monday that even though it’s unlikely such a law would have stopped the suicide, it would at least punish the people who are responsible."Laws being in place are not going to save a child’s life, but certainly no family should ever have to go through sitting here on a daily basis and knowing that these people are still next door and knowing what they’ve done," Tina Meier said.A neighborhood mother, her 18-year-old employee and 13-year-old daughter are accused of creating a fake profile of an attractive teenage boy to determine what Meier was saying about the daughter online.
